Glitter. Yes I just mentioned the g-word and it’s not New Years Eve or Christmas – what is happening!? It’s a rare occasion that a glitter laden formula comes into play out of these timeframes, but recently I’ve started to think that the shimmering shards do have a time and a place aside from end of year shenanigans. Of course it’s all dependent on the product – body glitter is never chic, unless you are attending a ’90’s themed party. So I’ve cobbled together the best of my glitter bunch that are perfect for when you want things to get a little jazzy. The use of the word ‘jazzy’ just ruined that prelude didn’t it?
When it comes to nails the impending pain that goes hand in hand with applying glitter polish – removal – is always the thing that puts me off. But there’s one colour that makes it worth while – Deborah Lippmann’s Cleopatra in New York; a bottle which holds varying sizes of golden flecks in a black gel formula. I usually reserve things like this strictly as a ring finger accent, but hell this one is too pretty for that. Just look at the swatches.
I’ve already mentioned my feelings on body glitter, but a modern update with a beachy twist comes in the form of NUXE’s Huile Prodigieuse Or (I stupidly took a picture featuring the original version). Gone are the sticky silver gels and welcome the oil brimming with little flecks of sunshine that turn any old leg into one that could be J.Lo’s. But it’s not just reserved for legs; throw on any limb, lock or décolletage and shimmer in the most subtlest of ways without looking like you’re heading to a fancy dress party.
Then of course there’s the most easiest, flattering and ‘normal’ area to place glitter – the eyes. I’ve been a big fan of the Illamasqua Pure Pigments for years, cracking out the shade Ore for literally every birthday night out on the past three occasions. They do get a little messy but it’s nothing that a big fluffy brush can’t dust away. For something a little more adhesive the Collection Glam Crystals Dazzling Gel Liner in 3 Funk dishes out a smooth coat of a golden glitter filled gel. Use as a liner, on top of liner or slap all over the lids for some serious ‘catching the light’ lid work. But if you want to go back to real glittery roots then you’ve got to try Urban Decay’s new Heavy Metal Loose Glitters (Goldmine is my fave). Sure they’re messy and I’ve been finding flecks of the stuff all over my floor, in my hair, behind my ear for the past week since I experimented with it, but when used with the Urban Decay Bondage Weightless Makeup Adhesive it looks out of this word (FYI, these two U.D bits are coming to the UK v.soon). The hardest to work with out of the three, but it’s the holder of much satisfaction when you get it right. Mix with the primer to make a liner, pat over colours or work up the opaqueness on its own. Think Beyoné as Foxy Cleopatra. And if it’ a look good enough for Beyoncé…
