Weekend Makeup Staples

When it comes to weekends, I am notably low-key in the makeup department. I’ve just got bigger things to ponder over a bold lipstick smudging or liner flaking up all over my face, like ‘Is it socially acceptable to have pancakes twice in one day?’ *cough* yes *cough* or ‘These pyjamas are so comfy, can I just wear them outside?’. I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t replied ‘balls’ to the latter question and strode out in my bed wear down to the local shop to get eggs for my pancake feast. So I’ve set the scene; I like things to be fuss-free and requiring a technique that can be aced in seconds. With that in mind I propose just four essential boxes be ticked. Here are my weekend makeup staples:

An ‘I’ve Slept a Shedload’ Moisturiser. Normally I wouldn’t pay so much attention to this step, but for these restful two days I like things to look glowy. No primers or powders, just a slick of a seriously good hydrator with a bit of coverage over the top – but we’ll get onto that in a second. In my eyes there’s one product that really encapsulates that juicy skin look and it’s Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. It’s not something I use on the reg, but there’s always a bottle of it hanging around somewhere for good reason. One thin layer, lightly smoothed on makes you look like you just got a bit heavy handed with your highlighter….in a good way.

An ‘I Woke Up Like ‘Dis’ Dewy Base. Hello tinted moisturisers! There’s just something about their formula that has ‘weekend’ written all over them. There are too many to list here but some of my favourites include the Jouer Matte and Luminizing Moisture Tints, Laura Mercier’s Oil-Free Tinted Moisturiser, Dior’s Nudeskin BB Creme, Dr Jart + Water Fuse BB Cream and many, many more. I find applying them with fingers gets the most natural finish, though I do tend to grab the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge to bump in some extra coverage where required. Concealer depends on how many Orange is the New Black episodes I watched the night before, but if it’s less than two then I just go in a little heavier with the tinted moisturiser on my bags.

A ‘Bright Eyed and Bushy Tailed’ Cheat. Now depending on your eye makeup preferences this one is going to differ a little. I never go too heavy, so my weekend lid look is just a parred back version of what I’d rock in the week. I snub the teenie weenie bit of brown liner that I’ve been smudging out along the lash line Monday to Friday, leave it bare, go crazy with the Japonesque Power Curl Lash Curlers and layer on a good coat of mascara – but here’s the important bit – just on the lashes on the outer half of my eye. Sounds a bit weird, but give it a go and I bet you’re impressed. It’s amazing how such a small trick can make things look wider and sorta feline, in a Sunday-friendly way.

An ‘I’m Not Wearing Anything On My Lips’ Lip Colour. What you’re really looking for here is something that can double-up in texture and colour as a wash of colour for the cheeks too. Then we’re really talking. If I’m in more of a nude mood then the AERIN Multicolour Duo for Lip and Cheek gets whipped out and the tawny brown texture gets to work. However, if I fancy something a bit more rosy then you can’t beat the Max Factor Miracle Touch Creamy Blush in Soft Pink. This stuff just looks so good. Vibrant enough to perk things up, but in a non-tacky texture that melts into the skin with a few dabs of a finger.

If I do ever slither out of my weekend uniform then out come the aforementioned of course, but if I do decide on a pancake feast with a pyjama-only dress code then it’s a sans makeup day.
