The ZARA Coat That’s a Bit Like a Blanket, But I Love It

Me and coats have a funny old relationship. I seem to remember having a breakdown as a ten year old in the aisles of M&S as my Mum attempted to bundle me into the thickest parka they sold as I wailed that all I wanted was a Spice Girl’s bomber jacket that my best mate had. I’ve always been a fan of jackets. Coats made me feel all bulky and I’d rather layer up with scarfs and feel the chill a little. I used to rock up to senior school in a corduroy fitted blazer when it snowed *raises eyebrow*. Then I matured, realised that freezing my nuts off wasn’t all that fun and now search for the cosiest ways to wrap myself in the cooler months. I’ve had some great coats over the years, but this season it was time for a change and so I turned where I always turn when it comes to outerwear – ZARA – and as always, it did not disappoint…

I wanted something that was warm, but also pretty formal as I have a fleece lined parka in my wardrobe that takes care of all dress-down, damn-it’s-freezing situations. It’s a hard brief to fill, but after a bit of browsing, I stumbled across their Wool Coat. The secret here is that it’s in a toasty texture, cut into a kinda dressy shape. An open trench with a waterfall neckline that sort of resembles a blanket, but could also be described as an ‘Olivia Pope-esque coat‘. Perfect. I spend most of my days working from home wrapped in some kind of throw so why not mummify myself in one when I leave the house too? It skims the knees meaning that it works best when paired with some kind of heel, but it can look edgy with some slip-on flats too and though I like it best when it’s flowing and open it’s hard to resist the urge to wrap it around yourself like a sleeping bag. Fash-Shun.

Finally – a practical coat that my Mum will approve of that doesn’t make me feel like the Michelin Man. ZARA are a good place to check out actually if you’re in the market for outerwear. Their stuff is always well cut, practical, but with a little twist at the same time and not too wallet walloping; but if you’re in the mood to splurge then it’s probably best that you don’t head to REISSdon’t do it!
