I’m not all that seasoned in the art of evening entertainment anymore. The 7pm-11pm slot in my life is most regularly filled with playing catch-up with Mad Men – if I can fit two episodes in I deem it a successful night – bathtime and resisting the urge to go to town on that tub of Ben & Jerry’s cookie dough that’s languishing in our freezer. Rock n’ roll. But when my girlfriends came to visit last weekend, I hauled on my highest pair of heels, headed for town and saved Don for another time. Here’s the makeup (and clothing!) menu for my Girl’s Night Out:
The Makeup: My self concocted Saturday night brief was for something slightly smokey, but leaning to the more subtle end of the spectrum. My base was fixed by a combo of the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in 6 (no flashback, scores major points for longevity), and my ol’ favourite Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer in Sand. I kept it pretty bare on the cheeks, just layering up a hefty dose of Kevyn Aucoin’s The Sculpting Powder in Medium and waiting for my impending bar-induced sweatiness to emit some sort of highlighting sheen. Brows were sorted with Hourglass’ Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Soft Brunette. Then I moved onto what could possibly be deemed the easiest smoked-out eye look ever – Estée Lauder’s Pure Colour Stay-On Shadow Paint in Chained*, applied all over the lid with a flat synethetic brush and blended at the edges with a fluffy opion, paired with lashings of L’Oreal Telescopic Waterproof Mascara on the top lashes and Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara on the bottom. Lips were kept slightly peachy and well nourished with a slick of Tom Ford’s Lip Colour Shine in Insidious*. Done.
The Outfit: I have been labelled a ‘Grannie Annie’ before and this is probably due to my ability to factor in warmth as my highest priority, so I took no chances and left not an inch of skin uncovered for those arctic ‘bar to bar’ walks. I squeezed myself into my All Saints Petrel Brodie Jeans, tucked in a Black Zara Linen T-Shirt, slipped on my humongous of Grey Zara Wedges and wrapped up in my Navy River Island Coat. Warmth > chicness.
The Clutch Bag:Â The following was lugged around for the duration of the evening in an Aldo number that’s been a long-standing member of my clutch bag crew:Â Tom Ford’s Lip Colour Shine in Insidious* for obvious re-application reasons, Clinque’s Bottom Lash Mascara due to its good layering properties, a mini vial sample of Diptyque’s Philosykos, a large powder brush and Burberry’s Sheer Foundation Luminous Compact Foundation in Trench No.03*, which does a good job at dusting on just the right amount of topping-up coverage without adding too much matteness.
A jovial evening was had by all. And yes, we still went to town on that Ben & Jerry’s tub when we got back. But after a weekend of excess, a wee little detox is needed – I reckon next weekend calls for a mud mask (or two)…
