It’s been a long time since I purchased a new foundation (as I write that line I’m thinking back and actually it’s probably been about two weeks – DOH – *pats self on back*), but in all seriousness the MAC Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation has been on my radar for a while. In fact it made it into my basket on Selfridges one day, but the checkout wouldn’t work, which was probably a good thing. I was expecting the beauty world to go crazy over this, but reviews have been few and far between which just fuelled my lust even more. Then two weeks ago in the MAC store it happened. Can a foundation be nourishing and waterproof? How long-lasting is it? Can a foundation even be waterproof? So many questions…
OK here’s the need to know. It’s available in the usual MAC shades and comes in at £25.50 for 25ml of product. Side note: I picked up NC20 which is a pretty good match for me. The MAC team always match me up as a NW20, but given that MAC foundations tend to oxidise on me a bit (this one does a little), I like to stick to the NC side of things. The little plastic squeezy tube makes it a good option for travel and holidays and the directions say to apply it with fingers, a sponge or a brush. The blurb promises a waterproof base that feels hydrated and an extremely long-wearing formula.
I guess the headline here is that it is extremely covering stuff. Scars, blemishes and redness are gone with even the minutest amount of product. I actually like it. That might be a bit strange for me given my tendency to lean towards sheerer bases, but that’s how I like them – light and skin-like or with a hefty whack of coverage for really crappy skin days or days when I’ve watched RuPaul’s Drag Race. Though full, the finish is slightly dewy which means things still end up looking natural. There is a tendency for this to cling a little to dry patches so you want to make sure that you’re freshly exfoliated and primed before you throw this on and I like it applied with my Louise Young LY34 Brush and then blended out a bit more with the BeautyBlender.
So the other question is – is it waterproof? I had a shower with this on and though I wouldn’t say my base looked perfect afterwards, the foundation was still there. If you wanted to, it would be easy enough to resurrect with a bit of drying off and touching-up. The winning aspect for me is that it’s long lasting and dewy – that’s a tough thing to find. In fact it kind of reminds me the long-discontinued CHANEL Pro Lumiére Foundation, but without the shimmer.
It’s not going to a base that I use everyday, but when I need something seriously long-lasting then this will be thrusted into my routine. It’s actually piqued my interest to try the rest of the Pro Longwear range. What are the standouts? Anything I need to try? I’ve got my pen and paper ready…
