Me and the Origins Mega-Mushroom range go way back. A long time ago when I was a student at University eagerly awaiting my loan to come in so I could spend it on books beauty bumf; I decided to up my skincare routine from a few items from the aisles of Boots that I’d cobbled together that were purchased mainly because they were on offer/smelt good/my friends used them, to a well rounded bunch of products that addressed my skin concerns, which were namely oiliness and redness at the time. I had my Liz Earle phase first, but after being dazzled by a rather fancy schmansy Origins counter in the local department store I decided that a brand switch was in order. So one April I went to town on the Origins Mega-Mushroom line-up. A collection designed for us rouge cheeked gals whose complexions can be a bit unruly and touchy sometimes. It sounded right up my street. Despite all the bits I used smelling slightly of cat excretions, it got to work and put me on the road to a well thought out routine along with clearing up the worst of my redness.
But recently the ruddiness has decided to stage a comeback. It’s not like the old days where I need to go heavy on the foundation in order to not look like a beetroot, but I know it’s there – just chilling in the background. So I thought it was time to revisit and on a trip to a counter around a month ago now I picked up their Mega-Mushroom Skin-Calming Face Mask – a product that I’d never given a go before, but you know I love a good face mask. I’ve got them all: cleansing, exfoliating, hydrating, illuminating – but ones that roots out redness? Nope.
I have to say that it does what it says on the tin. After a few weeks of using it every three days or so my redness has reduced (though of course that could always be down to non-face mask related things) and everything has calmed down and gone back to normal. The ingredient list reads like a who’s who of skin soothing ingredients and luckily the cat’s wee smell that haunts the rest of the range doesn’t appear here. It’s different to the other masks that I own in the way that it’s a ‘sinker inner’. There’s no drying clay consistency or thick gel-like feel; it goes on like a really hydrating moisturiser and then your skin drinks it up. I like ones like that, it gives me some kind of visual proof that it’s doing something. After 10 minutes you just tissue off the excess and rub the rest in. It’s cooling, calming and I can’t think of another work that’s appropriate that begins with ‘C’.
It doesn’t come in cheap, but at £35 from Selfridges for a 100ml bottle it’s going to last you while and for the fact that I can still reach for my glowy, light coverage bases – I’m not going to argue with that. So the skincare cycle goes full circle again…
