The Makeup Experiment

I don’t about you, but in the week I don’t like to risk it for a biscuit when it comes to my makeup. I like to use the products I know, love and trust to ensure that I don’t look in the mirror at 4pm to see that my eyeliner now resembles the markings of a panda and my cheek colour was probably a bit too full-on for my complexion but I couldn’t spot my error in the darkness at 7am that morning. Weekdays aren’t really when I experiment beauty-wise. That, my friends, is reserved for weekends when good ol’ Mark is on hand and will no doubt point out my panda-like makeup migration. So this weekend, I’ve put five new products to the test. Do they pass and make their way into the checked and approved weekday edit or do they straight-up fail? It was a mixed bag…

I’ve been having quite a bit of luck with BB’s and CC’s at the moment – but you’ll hear more about that later today – so I was in the mood to give the Burberry Fresh Glow BB Cream in Fair No.01 a go. For a BB it goes on quite thick so I preferred to smear it on with my fingers but the soft and glowy finish got a thumbs up from me. It does look super dewy when it’s first applied but give it a minute or two and it dries down to a more skin looking texture. Into the everyday edit it goes. Another product that I’m willing to move into that category is the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush Palette. I’ve used this product before so I already knew I was in for a light wash of luminising colour but what surprised me the most was my favourite shade of the trio. I thought Incandescent Electra (centre) would be my bag, but actually Mood Exposure (right) gave the nicest plummy and most importantly, natural looking, flush to my cheeks.

For my eyes I created something very subtle looking using Estée Lauder’s Pure Colour Envy Sculpting Eyeshadow Palette in Rebel Metal; washing the red-bronze all over my lids and popping a touch of the deep shimmery brown in my crease. Now it’s not like I really need another eyeshadow palette, but the colours in this one are right up my street and the centre top shade is a nice copper-toned brown that will be good for everyday easy makeup use. In it goes. To tightline I wanted to put the Hourglass 1.5mm Mechanical Gel Liner in Obsidian to the test. I’m not a fan of black on the lid, but in the waterline? I’ll allow it. In it went and actually this stayed surprisingly well put despite my watery eye tendencies. Beware of the twist-up mechanism though. What goes up does not come back down. Despite this interesting design, it’s still added to the pass pile.

The final newbie to try in the line-up was the AERIN Rose Lip Balm. Despite looking seriously stunning in the pot, this is the one that just didn’t quite work out for me. The texture was too hard and didn’t transfer to my finger in order to apply it to my lips, so there was a lot of smooshing and not much balm going on. But four out of five ain’t that bad? In fact I may need to have a bit of a clear out to stuff everything in. Classic Sunday right there…
