I’ve tried a tonne of new foundations over recent weeks. It seems like the beauty industry likes the mantra ‘New Year, New Base‘ as the counters have been flooded with brand-spanking new formulas, innovative textures and basically bottles of stuff that I really, really want to buy (yup – foundations are still my weakness). There’s been the CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation – blog post here – which is nice but perhaps a little thick for everyday use for me. Then the Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation, which is pretty but not too high on the coverage front. There’s also the reformulated YSL Touche Eclat Le Teint Foundation which I’ve yet to try, but have heard good things about. It’s a foundation-fest and I for one am one happy chappy about it. The foundation that has really rocked my socks though, isn’t a new offering at all. In fact it’s an oldie, but a goodie. Let me explain…
Do you remember that Estée Lauder shoot I did with Harry Makes It Up? Well during that Harry used the Estée Lauder Double Wear Light Stay In Place Foundation on me and I instantly fell in love. I took a picture of the bottle and practically ran to the nearest Estée Lauder counter and ever since it’s been my number one go-to for all things base, come day or night. Here’s the thing – it’s slightly more full coverage that what I’d usually go for, but it’s easily built up from a sheer finish depending on how much you use. A rice-size dollop and there you have yourself an everyday, Monday to Friday base that covers any redness. Make it more of a pea-size amount and then you’ll get a fuller coverage that looks pretty darn flawless – even under a magnifying mirror.
Along with the true buildable coverage, the finish is what really gets me. I don’t think I’ve ever tried a foundation before that’s pretty skin-like in finish but lasts that long. My face gets hungry for makeup and eats it up, even with primer, in a matter of hours so I wasn’t expecting too much when I looked in the mirror after a full-day of wearing this; but 12 hours later it still looked pretty fresh. Sure there was a bit of creasing around my eyes (YAY AGEING!) and a small amount of build-up around my nose, but it was nothing that a quick smoosh in with my finger couldn’t fix. I mean it’s not terribly dewy – I’ve definitely tried dewier – but it’s the fact that there’s a slight sheen to it and it’s long-lasting that I lurve.
For reference I’m the shade Intensity 1.0, there’s a pretty decent shade range available and it’s £30. I reckon most skin types will get on with this, perhaps unless you’re at either of the extreme ends of the oily/dry spectrum. Yup, I’m in love. Prepare to roll your eyes as I mention this for the 265th time in a video in a few months time…
