While settling up for some Space NK purchases a while back I came into the possession of officially the cutest sample ever. Just look at it. A teenie tiny, ‘drop-it-in-your-bag-and-you’ll-spend-the-next-10-minutes-trying-to-fish-it-out’ pot of lip loving – By Terry’s Baume de Rose. A whole 3g of it. Making it almost third of the full-size and approximately £12ish worth of product. A little ray of light did shine down from the sky and I’m pretty sure I detected some angels piping up when this was dropped into my bag. There’s not much purpose to this post other than a show and tell of this dinky beauty so I thought I’d sprinkle it with a few top tips on how to score on the sample front:
- Be a babe. Samples on counters are limited, so if you manage to strike up a bit of a rapport with the staff they’ll be much more likely to off load you with some of their best sachets, vials and spritzers.Â
- Just ask. Though bear in mind this point is highly related to the last one. Just explain that you’re really interested in product X and would like to give it a try before you buy, do they have any sachets, can they decant a bit for you, do a quick makeover so you can test it out? Nine times out of 10 it’s a yes. For the other time take your business elsewhere.
- See if a brand expert is on hand. The day that the cutest sample ever was bestowed on me was also the day that a By Terry ambassador was in store at Space NK. They have access to some kick-ass samples and the know-how so if you strike up a bit of banter about their brand, and slip in that there was something you’d like to give a go, they’ll try their best to sort you out.
So in conclusion smile, smile and….smile. And if all else fails, go in with the ultimate beauty lovers ice-breaker ‘What nail colour are you wearing?‘. It’s an easy route into a makeup centric-chat and you’ll end up with a new lacquer shade on your wishlist and hopefully the sample you wished for in hand.
