The Chic Way to Add Festive Sparkle

IMG_1090IMG_1000

I can’t say I’m Magpie when it comes to makeup. I like looking at glitter and I might ‘ooh‘ and ‘ahh‘ over a shimmer-laden lid wash in the aisles of Boots, but when it comes to actually wearing it I’m ok thank you very much. I stick to my mattes and subtle sheens and have firmly put my days of ’90’s glitter body gel and hair mascara behind me. Glitter body gel!? What were we all thinking? That being said each time the festive season rolls around my aversion to glitter waivers a little and I crack. A multi-faceted polish weasels its way onto my nails and a dab of glitter makes it onto the lids. Then come New Years Day it all gets packed away until December rolls around again. A short but sweet glitter wearing month. If you’re the same way as me and are always seeking out the chic way to add festive sparkle without looking like you’re the sixth Spice Girl, or you’re a glimmer-loving makeup magpie then here are my glitter-filled favourites…

I feel like one of the best glitter multi-taksers you can get your mitts on is a twinkle heavy gel formula. Usually reserved for eyes and housed in a lipgloss-like tube they can be painted over the cheekbones if you want to go all out or dabbed over your eyeshadow look for something slightly more subtle. They go on wet and take a while to dry down but once they do these things don’t budge. There’s nothing loose so it’s not messy at all and it’s a really party-proof way to add some glint to proceedings. My favourites are the Illamasqua Broken Gold Gold Leaf Gel which is a nice yellow-gold with chunky small and larger pieces and the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Midnight Cowboy, which is more silver-based and uniform in glitter chunk size.

The other way that I like to add sparkle is with a nail polish topper. Pop your usual lacquer on then pile on some sparkle either just on the tips, all over or as a ring-finger accent (my personal favourite is to do an ombre effect, see here). I love the Essie glitter for this, though O.P.I have some good’uns too. Right now I’m loving Rock at The Top, a yellow gold and Summit of Style, an almost bronzed, antiqued copper. Both have big and tiny chunks in which means that it’s not an obvious effect, more just like a little sprinkle that catches the light. Oh so chic. And if you ever hear about auditions for a sixth Spice Girl, you know where I am…
