The Carine Effect

While on the plane to Ghana I spotted the women in front of me watching something that looked right up street and consequently suffered an episode of in-slight film envy. I spied subtitles, a fashion show and a flash of one of my ultimate girl crushes – Carine Roitfeld. I’ve even got the Pinterest board to prove it. After some frenzied searching on the mini TV in front of me I discovered it was ‘Mademoiselle C’; a documentary of the putting together of the first issue of Carine’s debut solo magazine. It was SO good I almost watched it twice. But ever since I viewed it I’ve been fighting the urge to raid my drawers for the smokiest of shadows I own and get to work. Consider that itch scratched…

From my Pinterest conducted study, I reckon about 90% of the time Carine sports a dark bronze or black cream shadow smudged like hell over the lid and under the eye with lashings and lashings of liner. She ain’t afraid of eyeliner that’s for sure. So I followed suit using the Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Eyeshadow in Shimmering Bronze applied all over with my fingers. To smoke it out a little I took a tad on a MAC 224 Brush and blend it high into the crease and pretty low under the eyes for ultimate badass effect.

I could have left it there, but Carine wouldn’t; so in I went with Burberry’s Eye Definer in Midnight Brown No.02, a cocoa brown pencil that airs on the side of black. The texture’s pretty waxy so it sticks into place, but still leaves room for a bit of movement. I probably could have gone a bit darker with it all, but actually I felt I was channeling my inner Ms Roitfeld so well I threw on some heels and went out for dinner complete with my new smokey eye. I could get used to this.

Bronzed-up lids, lined eyes and pointy kitten heels purchased. Close, but no Carine.
