The Big Hair Kit

Me and big hair; it’s a love affair that just won’t fizzle. These days I’m less in my ‘Cheryl Cole big blow out’ phase and more in a ‘yes I know it’s October but please can I channel my inner beach babe’ one. Over the years I’ve developed quite a knack for the disheveled look – though some days I actually just am exactly that – a few tips, tricks and top products of which I’ve shared on VDM. But I thought I’d pile it all together in one big serving of volume. I’ve dubbed it ‘The Big Hair Kit’, original, huh? Five steps, five tools and products. Easy as pie.

WASH. The cleaner your locks, the lighter they’ll feel, the higher to heaven you’ll get. I like to use some quite clarifying and volumising – utilising every step here – so it’ll be no surprise to regular readers of this blog that it’s Bumble and Bumblers Surf combo that gets called into action. With just the right levels of lift and freshness, it’s my every two days go-to rinse duo.

PREP. The key step. Adding a bit of something post-wash pre-dry will help to hold everything in place. Skip whatever step you fancy, just not this one. My spritz of choice is Oribe’s Maximista Thickening Spray; a formula that gives just as much follicle fattening to the lengths as it does the roots. Oh and it smells awesome.

DRY. I don’t bother with fancy brushes or techniques when it comes to drying my bonce – oh no. I whip my hair back and forth Willow Smith stylée trying to get as much breeze though it as possible. Side to side, upside down – it’s quite the workout.

TEASE. Now this step is negotiable and one I’d suggest saving for when you want some real va-va-voom. Teasing can be a little time consuming and overuse is a bit of a no-no. The Denman Dressing Out Brush is d’bomb for this and I like just to take the hair at the crown and on the sides and brush-up slightly just to give it more shape. Nothing to crazy, not like my uni days…

SET. The final touch is a light mist with some sort of spray; hairspray, volumisers, whatever you fancy. I tend to use something like Oscar Blandi’s Pronto Texture and Volume Spray which works exactly how it’s titled. A final insurance spritz to make sure your oomph doesn’t droop.

See told you it was easy – just check out the video above. Pop a little Dry Shampoo at the roots on day two and you’re laughing. Now hands up who spotted the Grace Face?
