I didn’t get much from the sales this year, but one thing I did pick up was The Editors Pick’s Collection of Topshop Makeup from Cult Beauty. It’s since sold out – I’m not surprised it was a good £50 worth of beauty bumf for under half price – but it contained a whole bevy of bits that I’d never tried from the rather large and much-loved range. Good excuse for a VDM post I’d say. Here’s the breakdown:
THE HIGHS: There were two products that immediately jumped to the forefront on first application. The first is one I don’t hear much about, their Illuminator in Reflect. A bronzer/peach powder/highlight trio, it does everything you want in a cheek product in a quick dust. It’s kind of like the best bits of NARS Bronzer in Laguna and the Kevyn Aucoin The Celestial Powder in Candlelight all in one. The other favourite is an obvious choice and one that my best mate Lauren recommended when I quizzed her about all things beauty – the Glow in Polished. I dip my finger in, glide over the tops of my cheeks and what’s left is a glitter-free sheen that makes me glow. I see what they did there.
THE MEHS: Though the following products weren’t fails, they didn’t rock my world either. They fall into the category of ‘would probably buy them if they were next to the till’ impulse purchase kinda of thing, which lets face it. Will most likely happen. Let’s tackle the Nail Polish in Bomber first. A blackened purple, this is right up my street. The application was good and it lasted well, but I have a million and one of these shades (yes, really) and there was nothing that stood it out from the rest. Their Cream Blush in Head Over Heels is something I tried way back when the range first released and is a product that has managed to find its way into the hands of friend or family member since. The colour is a beaut, but the texture came off a little too powdery for me. In terms of cream blush formulas, I’ve slapped on ones that sit more comfortably on the complexion. Then there’s the Magic Liner in Engraved – now this I loved. The long nib means you can cheat a feline flick literally but just placing it against the lash line. The only downside? An attack of the panda eyes that arrived about 10 minutes after this photo. It’s one that needs a set.
THE LOWS: Bottom of the pack, quite surprisingly, were the two lip products. I’m sporting the Lips in Beguiled in the picture above and while the colour is lovely – the perfect balance of a berry and a red – the formula wasn’t quite right. I like my bold lips to be matte for good reason; not only does it make them long-lasting, for the most part it means they glide on opaque with no streaking. Beguiled just required a little too much work for me; it was patchy in places and the fact it’s a tad glossy means that any swiping action was moving the pigment all over the shop. It was a similar situation with their Lip Cream in Dust. Though the peachy nude colour was on point, the formula was a little weird. Is it a gloss? Is it a stain? Who knows.
So overall it’s a pretty good bag; my whistle for Topshop makeup is well and truly wet. Recommendations are welcomed as always. What’ya thinking?
