When we arrived at this flat, we did so with just one van-load of boxes, no furniture and a belly-full of Domino’s from the night before (it’s all we lived off when we moved if I’m being honest – shhh!). We’d thankfully had the foresight to purchase a bed and a mattress which was ready and waiting, but aside from that we used boxes to sub in for nightstands, tables, desks, chairs – the lot – for weeks. Who knew it took so long for furniture to arrive? Seriously, we waited 17 weeks for a sofa. That’s 17 weeks of watching Netflix on a camping chair! Aside from a few bits and bobs we’re mostly there in terms of furniture purchases, so I thought today I’d share the top five things that we purchased for the flat that after a few months of use, we’re bloody glad we did…
Cult Furniture Teal Eames Style Chairs – this particular chair isn’t available anymore from the website we used, but there are a tonne of other places online that do a similar thing. Not only are they pretty comfortable and have bit of bounce in the plastic so don’t feel like sitting in your old school chairs, they add a nice bit of colour to things and were a bit of a bargain too.
Magimix 3200XL Food Processor – not necessarily what I’d dub a ‘furniture purchase‘, but I’d go on the record to say that this is personally my top favourite buy for the flat. We had a cheaper model before but it was small and much weaker in its blending abilities. This however, turns whatever you put in it into mush in a matter of seconds and means that I no longer have to blend ingredients separately because they don’t all fit in. A pricey purchase, but a good investment in my eyes.
West Elm Rustic Modular Bookcase – this shelving unit satisfies Mark’s need to hoard a lot of unnecessary items and my need for things to look tidy, with its mix of open and closed units. It allows me to do that whole ‘shelf styling Pinterest‘ thing that I’ve always wanted to do, but actually holds a lot of our stuff at the same time. Open those doors and you’ll find board games and box sets – our two favourite things.
John Lewis Greyson Reach Floor Lamp – I don’t think there’s one person who’s visited the flat and not asked where this lamp is from. It’s something a little bit different and was the perfect comprise for us as Mark wanted a lamp that had a lampshade on the top and I wanted one that leaned in to the room a little. This does both and is a good mood-lighting piece for the evenings.
Joseph Joseph Garlic Rocker – now this might not seem like the most significant of purchases, but as a person who puts garlic in most things and always multiples the cloves required for a recipe by four, a good garlic press is priceless. There’s no pressing action or little itty bitty parts involved so you can use the whole clove and it’s not too much of a pain in the arse to clean. Garlic lovers – you need this.
