When it comes to bold lipsticks there is no contest in who makes my favourite formula. It’s the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils any day of the week. They’re opaque, long-lasting, matte but not prune-lip inducing and the colour range is pretty spot-on. I think the reason I love them the most though is because of their pencil format I don’t need to use a lip liner with them; and for someone who just can’t seem to get their lip liner right without their lips looking horrendously wonky and thus end up looking like Kylie Jenner after trying to get things looking symmetrical, I appreciate that. A lovely twitter user asked for my top colour suggestions, so your wish is my command. Here are my faves…
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl. I’d call this ‘The Beginner’s Bold Shade’ because it’s a mix of pink and red which means that it’s very user friendly and doesn’t feel too scary when you apply it. It’s a great colour actually and is one that I don’t wear enough, but when I do it feels good. Thanks for the reminder.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square. This colour will always have a special place in my heart because it’s the one that made me realise my true love for orangey reds. It’s my favourite one I’ve found; all bright and summery. It’s the one lipstick that I feel I could go all Gwen Stefani with and make my signature colour.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella. A true classic red. It’s not too warm or too cool, or too bright or too deep – it’s just right. This is one of my most worn-down because whenever I fancy a red and don’t really want to think about it then this is what I reach for. A nice all-round people pleaser.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Damned. This is my current favourite right now. In fact I love it so much that I feel a bit naked in videos when I don’t wear it. I’ve always though of it as a pretty out there colour, but compared to what’s up next and others that I own, it’s more of a deep pinky plum. A great ‘wear with whatever‘ colour.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu. Now this one isn’t for the faint hearted. It’s a cool, blackcurrant purple that can look slightly terrifying but I just roll with it and brush off Mark’s stares. If all else fails it can be toned down to a berry with a layer of Dragon Girl over the top, but personally I love it. Bold lips that don’t budge – right there.
