Tomorrow I’ll be bringing you my 2014 Makeup Favourites. It’s long, it’s beefy, it’s wordy and probably a little overwhelming so I thought today I would show you like the ‘best of, of the best of’. Oh dear, just writing that down makes me realise how ridiculous that sounds, but you know what I mean. If I had to pick just five things that I’ve discovered this year that really rock my boat, then they would be the following…
Fairydrops Scandal Queen Mascara. I picked this up on a whim from a BEAUTYMart concession in my local Topshop a few months back now. Just because I remembered some of the US beauty gals I watch talking about the brand and well – I’m glad I did make that impulse buy because this is the best mascara ever. L’oreal Telescopic Waterproof Mascara has been replaced and the more this dries out the more I love it (gross, but true). Big lashes, long lashes, separated lashes, curled lashes – it does it all.
Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Liquid Lipsticks. In terms of lipstick launches that have arrived in 2014 this is the top dog for me. These are, hands down, the best liquid lipsticks I’ve ever tried. Smooth and opaque in one coat these create a matte stain on the lips that you will genuinely have to scrub off at the end of the day. The only downside is that they do differ formula-wise from colour to colour. I love Pink Pong, Olé Flamingo (my favourite – a more wearable bright pink) and Hot Pepper, but Grand Cru is terrible. Definitely worth a swatch to test the consistency before you buy.
Soap & Glory Solar Powder. Lily had been banging on about this for yonks and after realising that without my weekly doses of fake tan my usual favourite NARS Bronzing Powder in Laguna was looking a bit full-on, I too invested. Since it was purchased mid-year it’s practically all I’ve used bronzer wise. I haven’t used Laguna since. Featuring a split compact with a light peachy bronzer on one side and a darker more brown one of the other you can amp up or down your sun-kissed colour depending on where you swirl your brush making it a good option for us paler skinned gals.
LORAC Pro Palette. I really could quite happily dish out all my other palettes to friends and family, hold this one back and be one happy lady. Ever since I received it (thanks to Sandra!) back in the summer I’ve used it at least a few times a week since. The mix of mattes and shimmers means it covers most looks and bar the usual bronzes, taupes and golds there’s some colours in there too – a purple, a silver, a reddy copper – that I find I can actually incorporate in without it looking too much. Oh and the formula, the packaging, the texture….the list is endless.
Clarins Instant Concealer in 01. This is the newest addition to this line up, but ever since I discovered this in October (I think), it’s been taken everywhere with me and is something I squeeze out for not only concealer duties but also for foundation on days when I want to have a light coverage day. The finish is creamy, but pigmented – don’t be fooled – this can stuff cover, it just does so in the most natural, skin-like way.
You may wish to mentally prepare yourself for tomorrow’s video. Save it till you have a bath, hang up your washing, make dinner while it’s in the background. Heck – you could probably do all three…
