I can’t say that I was ever really into the idea of green juices. Give me an orange juice with bits any day. But when my sister got into it and wouldn’t stop raving on about how tasty they were and how she was easily scoffing down her ‘five a day’ quota when paired with a veg-filled dinner it got me thinking. Despite eating healthy-ish 80% of the time, I often lack in the vegetable consumption department. Berries? Dried fruit? Apples? Sure. Green stuff? Yeah, not as into ’em. After a lot of juicer research (I cannot stress to you how many Amazon reviews I read), I ended up with the Magimix Le Duo XL Juice Extractor, which though it’s not exactly fun to clean is not too bad and sits taller than it is wide which is fab for peeps like me with a lack of counter space. Now, whipping up a juice or smoothie is part of my morning. They just taste fresh and are a great way of using up loose bits of fruit and veg. I fashion the leftovers into crackers; a recipe I found in Deliciously Ella. After a bit of trial and error (kale = yuck, cucumber = yum), I thought I’d show you my most-juiced recipe that makes a green/slightly brown connotation that tastes much better than it looks. Promise.
SWEET & GREEN JUICE. Now the secret here is in the ‘seasonings’. The ginger, lemon and/or lime and the mint make everything taste good (except kale, I don’t think anything can make kale juice taste good) and while the apple and carrot bring a bit of sweetness, the rest of the veg brings the greens.
You will need (for one medium glass): A Small Knob of Ginger (depending on how spicy you want it), A Handful of Mint, ½ Lemon, ½ Lime (or less if you’re not as into citrus as me), 1 Big Handful of Spinach, 1 Apple, 1 Carrot, ¼ Cucumber, 3 Sticks of Celery.
I tend to fill the cup with a few ice cubes first and then juice in the order I’ve written above (but don’t mind me as I’m a juicing newbie and am probably doing it all wrong!). Serve and enjoy, though you might wish to clean up your juicer first. Fun times.
