How to Wear Red Eyes and Red Lips Together

Red Eyes and Lips

When I think of autumn makeup, I think of red. Rouged-up lips grazing the tops of scarfs and slightly rusted shades over the lids that pull a pink hue in the early evening light. Actually it’s right up my street and in terms of the closest a colour can be to my neutral cosmetics uniform, red is it and one I feel comfortable-ish at pulling off. Reds eyes or lips? Easy. Red eyes and lips? Yeah, no so much. However it’s not an impossible beauty brief and the finished look is well worth the extra planning…

It doesn’t need to be red, red. A pillar box red mouth and lid area is quite a look – kudos to you – but how I manage to incorporate the colour scheme is to go off piste a little. For the eyes I like the Tom Ford Eye Quad in Burnished Amber which leans a little more pinky (MAC do some great coppers too) and then I pair it with a burgundy, berry lip like KIKO’s Ace of Diamond Lipstick in 27.

Skip the blush. I’m naturally ruddy so in order to rock the rouge I have to remove all traces from my complexion before I can even think about eyes and lips. With that in mind I, personally, skip the blush as things can start looking a tad bit clown-like with, but if you feel you need it – slap it on.

It’s all in the detail. It may not be everyday that you rock red makeup so I’d suggest taking your time here and making sure all the details are spot on: eyeshadow blended to a point where you can’t really decipher where it started, lip liner if needed or apply your lip colour with a brush, clean up the edges of your pout so the lines are clean. You get the gist.

Never underestimate the power of mascara. Ever. Especially when red eye makeup is in the equation. The same goes for eyedrops and a flesh coloured eye pencil. Save the vampire chic for Halloween.
