I remember the moment when I was browsing through the Argos catalogue (that was our version of ‘online shopping’ back in the day) and I went from perusing the toy pages to scanning the beauty electricals for inspiration for my Christmas list (I used to write down the product code and page number just to make it easier for Father Christmas). A defining moment in my graduation from girlhood to womanhood, right there. I always asked for a facial steamer and though I never ended up with one, I just made do with a DIY steamer at home made up from the washing up bowl and a towel. I was obsessed with steaming because I was sure I read somewhere that Baby Spice did it, or someone like that. We did it at sleepovers, before School Discos, Talent Shows – it was a thing we did as our big event prep.
It’s been years since I’ve given it a go and it seems to be back in a big way in the skincare world with brands now offering steaming-specific soaks that can be added to the water to up the skincare benefits. I’ve been giving it a go with the SkinOwl Beauty Steam and though it’s pretty tough to pinpoint down the exact skincare bonuses, it really is so darn relaxing. I do it in the evenings, post-cleanse and then throw on a mask afterwards which I find works that little bit better due to the steaming step before. My skin feels oh-so-clean and I feel oh-so-chilled. I think it’s something to do with the fact that you’re face down in a towel-enclosed steam bath and are phone and screen-free for five minutes which is always nice. A nice little extra step to throw in on a Sunday; along with a bit of Argos page-flicking, just for old times.
