When it comes to jazzing up the eyes I don’t think there’s a better product out there than eyeshadow sticks for the job. Creamy and pigmented, they’re easy to apply – usually without the need for a brush – and can be built up, sheered out all over the lid or concentrated on the lashline for a smokey Olsen-type look. Lighter colours make for great shimmery washes or inner corner highlights and the darker colours add definition and can be an easy way to add a non-neutral shade into your look. A blue? I know. Hear me out…
Picking my favourites is a tough call but my favourite favourite would have to be the By Terry Ombre Backstar in Brown Perfection. It’s mostly due to the dark chocolate brown colour that sculpts without harshness, but the formula gives a few seconds of give before it sets and then it does not budge (a quality owned by all the five mentioned here). As a budget alternative the Rimmel Scandaleyes Shadow Stick in Bad Bronze is a good pick that has a touch of shimmer running through it and if I want something with a bit more red it in to act as a base for an amber eye look, I love the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Burnished Bronze. However if it’s colour I fancy I like something jewel-toned. Not bright or bold, but rich and two that fit that bill are the Jouer Creme Eye Shadow Crayon in Avant Garde (I do love a navy) and the Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon Colour-Morhphing Eyeshadow Pencil in Amethyst Aphrodisiac, which is a B.E.A.U.tiful taupey purple.
So for demo purposes I’ve used my fave By Terry in the three different ways that deploy eyeshadow sticks: on the top lash line, on the top and bottom lash line and all over the lid smoked out courtesy of my ring finger. Easy peasy. What’s your favourite way to smudge ’em?
