I’ve never been a ‘legs out’ kinda gal. At school I’d be the one quietly boiling in the corner in trousers during the summer months when all the other girls cracked out cute pleated skirts (it was the post-Christina Aguilera Dirty years and ‘the shorter the better’ was the general mantra at the time) and up until two years ago I don’t think I owned anything that was leg baring other than a few dresses that I’d don for nights out when I was feeling brave. I not quite sure what it was that kept me covering them up all these years; psoriasis patches probably played a part, combined with the fact that I’m a clumsy klutz who’s always got a bruise or three on my shins who is also horrible at shaving and always misses a patch or ten – yeah that sounds about right. But in recent times I’ve decided to put my scaly, slightly hairy legs on show and grow my short/skirt/dress wardrobe and my latest addition may just be my favourite yet…
Denim shorts. I’m not sure I’ve worn a pair since the ’90’s when I owned some that had an elasticated waistband and were purchased from Woolworths, until now. I just kept spotting them on my favourite style bloggers (Style Drifter being my most oft-browsed inspiration), paired with knits, boots, marl t-shirts, blazers – basically everything else that I own in my wardrobe – looking so ridiculously chic. I had to give it a go. And give it a go I did with this pair of Topshop Hallie Denim Hotpants. And the verdict is in. I love ’em. They work perfectly well with all the aforementioned pieces, the rips give them a casual feel and the fit is surprisingly flattering, nipping in at the waist and creating a silhouette that makes those pins a little longer and ends at just the right length. I’ve been pairing them with slouchy t-shirts and yep you’ve guessed it….my ASH Jalouse Boots. What else?!
Two things to note. I purchased them in a size up from normal (I usually come up a 10 in Topshop, but went for 12 which gives them a bit of extra bagg) and I accidentally picked up a pair that were from the tall section and didn’t realise till I got home which makes them a tad longer than the usual sizings which I actually like. Less chance of my cheeks hanging out the bottom, you know?
