Being a Bookworm

I’m a bit of a hermit anyway, but when the rain and cold weather sets in there’s nothing I love more than keeping cosy inside, eating a shedload of food and watching RuPaul’s Drag Race. But with just a handful of episodes to watch until I’m all caught up, I’ve been sourcing alternative entertainment – books. I’ve been uncontrollably hauling new reading material and that’s not a bad thing, right? So this weekend I thought I’d give you the deets on the latest additions to my shelves, along with my thoughts on what I’ve read so far…

I feel like first I should discuss Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. From start to finish it took me less than 72 hours. Anything that featured on my to-do list became an annoyance and my number one priority throughout those three days was to read this book. It’s that good. At the end of each chapter I let out a little ‘noooooo‘/’reeeeealllyyy‘/sharp intake of breath. A twisted thriller that you don’t see coming – a must read. Like now.

Now here’s the ‘books written by kick-ass women’ paragraph. I’d had Pretty Honest by Sali Hughes on Amazon pre-order for yonks, so when it arrived I almost planted one on the postman in excitement. If your bookshelves are bowing under the weight of every beauty book you’ve managed to find but you still want more, then this is your guy. In fact if you’ve never even read a makeup-centric book before then pick up this one. It covers everything – I actually don’t know how Sali managed to squeeze it all in – and is full of knowledge, tips and how-tos that even the most seasoned cosmetics pro can learn from. Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham was another one it felt like I had on pre-order for years. I’ve yet to turn a page but the 140 character reviews I’ve spotted on Twitter so far are good. The final two are both from Caitlin MoranHow to Build a Girl and How to Be a Women. Two books that I popped on my Birthday list that my sister ended up getting for me, slightly concerned by the book’s titles and my love for RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Finally a trio of books that I picked up on a whim. Us by David Nicholls was always going to end up in my possession because One Day was just such a cracker of a book. It’s also a deliciously satisfying to hold hardback and on offer in WHSmith at the moment. Berlin Street Style: A Guide to Urban Chic by Angelika Taschen was a purchase from Urban Outfitters – which has one of my favourite book sections, always find some good’uns there. WARNING: this book will make you want to organise your wardrobe, life and head to Berlin immediately. Then we have How to Stress Less by Benjamin Bonetti, a book that I picked up in the airport on my way off on holiday. I think I got about 10 pages in while I was away before concluding that even just reading the book was ‘too stressful’. I think I need to try a different tack.
