Teenage me got to fulfil a dream to be a real-life groupie and tour with a band this past Bank Holiday weekend. When Mama’s Gun – a funky London/Brighton-based five piece and close family friends of Lily’s – said they’d be heading to Germany, Lily and I thought we’d tag along with them seeing as it’s a place that’s been high on our list of counties to visit. So we soaked up the tour life, snacked on sauerkraut and got to meet some of you lovely lot. There’s a vlog coming your way this Sunday, but in the meantime I thought I’d shake out the contents of my photo app and talk you through them…
The first stop and the rainiest one too was Cologne; a beautiful city but unfortunately we didn’t have much time to explore once we’d factored in travel. Boo! Mark had visited before and told me to keep an eye out for the Cathedral and boy was it a stunner. We’ll back fo’ sure. Next we trundled over to Hamburg where we had a little more time to wander around town. Naturally we headed to a Burger joint. Dur! I asked for recommendations on Twitter and the general consensus was that a visit to Hans im Glück was a good idea. What a place! With birch trunks setting the scene, there was a fairytale theme going on and the burger was delicious. Mine had rocket, balsamic, Parma ham and cheese – oh yeah! – I’m salivating, just thinking about it.
For the final tour date we headed over to Berlin via the guy’s tour bus which involved copious amounts of the German version of Percy Pigs and episodes of Jackass *slowly puts noise-cancelling headphones on*. The boys joined us and stayed for a long-weekend featuring some of the hottest weather I think I’ve ever experienced. The heat meant exploring was kept to short snippets, sandwiched between hopping into air-conditioned spots and water breaks in the shade. Still we managed to squeeze in a boat tour, getting lost on the underground and plenty of food. Burgermeister was a place that came highly recommended and where we headed to with the band after their final gig. Hands down one of the best burgers I’ve ever consumed right there. Californian Kitchen Slam was a great breakfast find courtesy of our Berliner friend, Jay (fun fact, he designed this website) and Kaschk did a fab iced coffee. Also sauerkraut tastes INCREDIBLE. I’m converted.
Big love to all the lovely ladies (and their boyfriends/cousins/brothers/sisters/best mates that had bought their friends a ticket as a Birthday surprise – what good eggs!) that came along. We very much appreciated the warm welcome and hope you all had an amazing, if rather sweaty, evening. Germany we’ll be back, but until then – auf wiedersehen.
