Before moving on to the main issue, firstly we need to address the fact that the landscape of the Selfridges Beauty Hall has had a shake-up. I don’t think I’ve traipsed round those parts for over a month (I know, madness) and since my last visit there’s been the new addition of the Charlotte Tilbury counter, NARS has moved locations and I spotted multiple brand counters that had had a makeover of their own. I recommend a visit if it’s been a while for you too. In that latter category comes Bobbi Brown, whose counter has been spruced up. There are now iPads filled with video tutorials for you to play along with, a lip bar and the longest makeover table in the whole of Selfridges for you to pull up a chair and have a makeup lesson at, guided by their MUA’s. It’s all rather grand. So I sidled up in need of some smokey eye tuition and here’s what went down…
I was put in the hands of Amalie – Bobbi’s right hand lady during LFW so I heard – who decided to try out something a little different to my usual bronzed-up lids and instead plumped for a silver more cool toned look. She began by priming the lid with Shell, a light beige shadow. The Bobbi way is to shun under-brow highlight and instead add a wash of a brightening shade all over the lid as the first step. Then to build up the smoke she used the newly released Smokey Eye Kajal Liner in Storm quite thickly over the top lashline and little underneath and then blended out with the smudger housed on the other end of the liner (which actually works FYI unlike the usual plasticky offerings). Creamy, pigmented and no tugging required.
To everyday-it-up for a non-liner lover like myself Amalie used the Eye Shadow in Smoke to transition the colour from line to lid, again both on the top and bottom. Apparently the darker eyeshadows in Bobbi’s line were formulated more with eye lining duties in mind rather than crease work. Then for a bit of glam she pressed the Sparkle Eye Shadow in Mica over the lids – the trick here is to use fingers for application to avoid a face full of glitter overload. One coat of another new launch – their Smokey Eye Mascara – to the lashes and I was ready to leave armed with a full page of notes.
The finishing touches were added with the Corrector in Extra Light Bisque and a little of the Pot Rouge in Fresh Melon over my cheeks and lips – a creamy peach? Well that’s another product that has shot its way to the top of my wishlist.
My top pick? Those new Smokey Eye Kajal Liners and Black Coffee is my winner – a rich cocoa shade I fell in love with at first swatch. Cute name, beautiful application.
