Growing up I was a lipgloss girl. It was the early noughties and all I ever wanted for Christmas was a Lancôme Juicy Tube, though Father Christmas never gave in to that request. It was a time where everything had glitter in it and I happily rolled on my silver-flecked, peppermint scented gloss that felt more like vegetable oil than anything else, all over my Spice Girls-taught pout. It wasn’t until I discovered this blogging world and the wonderful cosmetics sweetie shop – MAC – that I really started to get in to lipsticks. I had my MAC Myth, GOSH Darling and Barry M 101 and I painted them on until my lips looked like they’d been caked in concealer.
Now lipsticks are something I wear almost daily (I thankfully embrace non-concealer lip colours these days) and I love formulas from both ends of the budget spectrum. Speaking of the lower end wallet-wise, there are some new ones from Rimmel and you all know how I love a good ol’ Rimmel Lipsticks – hello 107! What a throwback, eh? Now the latest release are called The Only 1 Lipsticks – bold claim there – and they’re opaque, slightly sheeny, very hydrating and for something not matte they don’t wear off too quickly either.
Let’s address the good bits first. There are a fair few shades in the range, but my favourites are 700 Naughty Nude, a dusky rose pink, 600 Peachy-Beachy, which is a classic peachy coral and 820 Oh-So Wicked, a deep black cherry that given the nature of the colour I’d wear patted in lightly to my lips to create a kind of stain. There’s an almost waxy texture to them that makes them quite long lasting for a satin-finish formula and I have to say that I’m rather fond of the scent. The powdered floral is just pure nostalgia for me.
The bad? The colour selection is skewed slightly to bolder colours, so if you’re a nude lover like myself then there’s not that many to pick from and the waxy texture means that they’re not the easiest to apply to the lips, especially the darker shades (thankfully there are some new additions to the Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner range which come in handy). Also the scent, though I love it, will be a turn off for some given that it’s not the most subtle.
It might seem like a bit of a mixed bag, but I’m trying to give you all the ‘need to know’ snippets ‘ere and overall I’d say this is a great little addition to the aisles of the drugstore. Heavy on the pigment, all cushiony and soft on the lips and light on your bank balance. *thumbs up*
