I’ve been ambling across mascara no man’s land since my ol’ fave L’Oreal Telescopic Waterproof Mascara disappeared from the shelves earlier this year. I’ve got a handful of drugstore fallbacks that I’ve been satisfied with, including another L’Oreal one, their Shocking Extensions Telescopic Waterproof Mascara, which doesn’t seem to have made its way to UK soil yet, but nothing that caught my heart quite like the Telescopic. The other day, completely off the cuff I perused the YSL counter and exited with the YSL Volume Effect Faux Cils Waterproof Mascara purchased. With a million and one raves I’ve spotted over the years whirling round my head and the luxe packaging blurring my decision making it was finally time to give it a whirl and yep, it’s love.
There are a few reasons why I wish I didn’t love it but I do. Firstly it comes in at double the price of my usual mascara loves (boo!), though isn’t that what Boots Advantage Card Points are for? Secondly, it comes in fancy schmanzy gold packaging which looks fabulous for a few weeks until it gets scratched up in the depths of your makeup bag. Thirdly, it’s equipped with a fibre brush wand, whereas I’m normally more of a plastically girl myself when it comes to combs. All signs point to neigh, but for me it’s yay. Despite its pitfalls the formula is spot on, adding volume and length in equal measures and managing to keep my Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler-induced flutter. It stays in place all day with no smudging even with my eyes that decide to stream with tears in the cold climate (I really am quite a catch) and there’s no flaking or signs of tiring to be seen. Now I can see what all the fuss is about when it comes to YSL mascaras.
