My dalliances into hair colour haven’t been all that adventurous. I only dabbled in ombré after two years of mulling over the idea and DIY box dyes? Well I’ve never been brave enough to give them a go. Just attempting a French plait leaves my hair in one gigantic knot so I’ve always been wary of what monstrosity would end up on my head if I played colourist at home. Splattered sheets, stained hands, and an unintentional ombré affect after a haphazard application is how I pictured it ending. However, there’s a product out there that puts all my aforementioned premonitions to bed – L’Oreal’s Casting Crème Gloss. There’s no drastic blonde to brunette transformation or vice versa to be seen here, just a little lift in colour – a hint of tint if you will – thats main purpose is to dose the locks with a big ol’ hit of shine over anything else. First you gotta pick your colour. A decision made a little easier by the online diagnostic tool which picks out an apt selection based on your preferences. I plumped for Chilli Chocolate out of the shades lined up for me; a warmed-up brunette with just a flash of red. Then there’s the allergy test – an über important step that must be carried out 48 hours prior to colouring – three dabs of the colour you’re wishing to go behind the ear. Remember to factor that one into your colouring timeline ladies. Then it’s time to colour.
I sported a black towel round the shoulders with a thick swipe of moisturiser around the hairline and on the tops of my ears for the occasion. It was quite the look. Mixing was easy, just a two-step process with a bit of bottle shaking involved; then it was time to put nozzle to root. Despite being perched on the corner of my white linen laden the drip-free formula stayed true to its word and with the product not containing ammonia, not only was it less damaging to my scalp and lengths, it also meant there were no funky smells going on. Colourant slicked on, looking like Stephen Segal, 20 minutes passed and it was time to rinse it out and use what is probably one of the best conditioners I’ve ever tried – the Shine Enhancing Conditioner. This step loads up the locks with gloss and serious shine and boy did it do just that. After blowdrying things were sleek, soft and subtly enhanced colour-wise with just a dash of red that makes a cheeky appearance every time the sun comes out. I like.
