The Beauty Bag with Jennie Williamson

Meet Jennie, one of my favourite co-workers I’ve ever had and easily one of the nicest, most chirpiest, all-round lovely people I know. We were colleagues back when I worked in Beauty PR and I can hand on my heart say that the highlight of my day was grabbing a bread-centric lunch and having a good ol’ catch-up with Jennie. Being a beaut too, I just knew you had to meet her so before we grabbed a carb-feast dinner last week (see – nothing’s changed), I asked her to unload the contents of her everyday makeup bag for this month’s Beauty Bag and talk me through. Here’s what she had to say…

“I keep everything in this Oliver Bonas Bag which is actually pretty structured so everything’s nice and easy to find. The first thing I apply is the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer which I got as a sample and can’t stop using. I do find it a bit strange – it goes on kind of sticky – but after a few minutes it’s clear, fine and dry. It’s worth it though as I do think that it helps my foundation to last one million percent longer. I apply it with fingers, but when it comes to foundation I always use the Real Techniques Stippling Brush. It’s a bit bent from where my boyfriend tried to use it to open something, but I seriously don’t think I could live without this brush – everything just goes on so smooth and evenly with it. I’m absolutely in love with CHANEL’s Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation in B30; I swear by it. This one and their Perfection Lumiere are my two favourite foundations, but this is my daily go-to as it feels so light on the skin, but it’s such good coverage.

I get quite prominent bags under my eyes, so I use the Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer every morning. It’s illuminating and does the job, but I wouldn’t go too crazy with this on blemishes as it can come off a bit too radiant – though it covers perfectly under my eyes. I love a bit of bronzing, so the MAC Bronzing Powder in Golden is a must. I do love it, but I can’t go too crazy with it because it has got quite a lot of shimmer in it, so if I’m going to work I can’t go bananas. I adore a bit of tanning. At first I used to go for the expensive ones, like St Tropez, but now I find the cheaper ones to work just as well. I’m currently using the new waterproof version of Rimmel’s Sunshimmer and it’s like a quarter of the price and it’s just as good. I finish my base off with Benefit’s That Gal Face Brightening Primer, which I’m pretty sure is supposed to be used at the beginning, but I use it at the very end. It’s more of a highlighter for me.

The Rimmel Professional Eyebrow Pencil in Hazel is basically my eyebrows. A really good colour for me and it’s nice and long-lasting. Everyday I don’t tend to reach for eyeshadow, but I always put a tiny bit of eyeliner on the top of my lids for definition. The Rimmel Scandaleyes Precision Micro Waterproof Eyeliner is nice and easy to use, but because I use it everyday I do find it to dry out pretty quickly. For my mascara I’m currently using L’Oreal’s False Lash Flutter Mascara. I’ve never found a mascara that I’m really loyal to, so as soon as one runs out I’ll try another one! But this is doing well, it doesn’t clump and it has a crazy brush; I would repurchase it, but only when I’ve tried ten more. Here’s the thing – I never just one mascara. I find that to get everything – no clumps, length and volume – I always need two and really it’s all about the brush. At the moment I use the L’Oreal for volume and then the Maybelline Great Lash Blackest Black Mascara on the outer corners and bottom lashes so things don’t get clumpy.

For lips there’s only one lipstick that I really love – MAC’s Creamsheen formula in Ravishing. It’s my everyday go-to that I’ve used down to the nub and it must be the third one that I’m on. It’s great because I can put a tiny bit on and it just gives a bit of peach, but then you can really go to town with it in the evenings and then you get a full-on coral lip. Love it.”
