So we’ve had the hair ombre, then the eyeliner ombre – seriously, some of pictures I’ve seen of this on Pinterest are jaw-droppingly awesome – and now it’s time for the lip ombre to have its moment. It’s not a new trend exactly; it’s a look that Pamela Anderson and various other ’90’s babes rocked years back, but it’s having a bit of a revival and in a more subtle way than those brown lip liner days.
I’ve seen a few products on the market that lend themselves to the lip ombre method. There are double-ended lipsticks and what not, but this new launch from Topshop made me ‘ohhh‘ and ‘ahhh‘ a bit. They are called the Lip Ombre and are available in four different shade pairings, each for £9. Not bad. I’ve had a play with the colour Perplex and I’m actually a bit more converted to this ombre thing than I thought I would be…
Ok the presentation is cute, but the formula is an interesting one too. Unlike these dual lipsticks I’d seen, the two shades are served in compact form with the darker shade on top and the colour pop for the centre of the lips on the bottom. They’re creamy and pigmented, but sort of have a powdery finish when they’re applied to the lips meaning that the finish is matte and though you could get fancy using a brush, I just slapped it on with my fingers and found blending a breeze. Perplex is a deep rosy red base that has a touch of silver glitter in it (if I’m being picky I wish it wasn’t there), with a slightly creamier in finish orangey peach that is to be patted on in the centre of your lips. Swatched side by side on my hand I struggled to see how these two would work together, but on the lips they work surprisingly well. The graduation is subtle and the effect was not an unwearable editorial look like I’d imagined, but more of a plumped up appearance on my lips which I actually quite liked.
It’s a bit more effort than I like to exert on my lip colour on a daily basis, but the mixing of two colours to create a faux level of fullness in my pout area is definitely something I’d consider if I was taking my sweet ass time with my makeup or was dressing up as Kylie Jenner for a costume party.
