You know me and eyeliner. We don’t get on. But every now and again I give it another crack to see if my shakey bakey hands have steadied enough to apply a flick with pinpoint precision and am always presented with a wonky, mismatched pair of lined peepers half an hour later. Perhaps it’s because the results always make me laugh? In fact on the above photographed occasion the postman arrived halfway through my little experiment and I had to greet him at the door with one racoon eye and one bare lid. An idea for halloween perhaps? But there are a few products that have landed on my desk that warrant a roadtest and an easy peasy technique that I’ve been giving a go recently that I thought I’d share. Eyeliner – lets do this…Â
Firstly I’ll touch on the newly discovered technique. It’s simple. All that’s required is a brown matte shadow and a slanted eyeliner brush. I dip the brush in the shadow and swipe lightly on the outer third of my top lashline, then I angle the brush up slightly and press down making a small line joining the outer corner of my eye to the crease. It’s the makeup move I used in my ‘Autumn Style Staples’ video which a few of you picked up on. It’s literally foolproof. You get just a smidge of definition and as it’s put into place with shadow it’s so easy to remove if things go wrong. I tend to blend the flick in a bit so it isn’t so stark and I’m ready to rock. FYI the products pictured above that I use for this are MAC’s Eyeshadow in Espresso and the Zoeva Wing Liner Brush*.
Next lets talk liquid liner. Generally it’s my least favourite form of eyeliner application as I find it to be the most messy, but when the Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen* landed in my grasps I felt it was my duty to give the weighty double-ended scriber a go. Featuring a normal sized nib on one end and teeny tiny calligraphy-style one on the other, TF boast that whatever eyeliner look you desire this duo-brushed pen will do it for you. So I tested their theory using the larger of the two painters for a thick flick and the smaller for a thin everyday-style line and yup it worked. Both ends worked equally well painting on a opaque black pigment without any drag and too much mess. I finished it off with an upper waterline tight-lining with Bobbi Brown’s Smokey Eye Kajal in Black Coffee* – its silky smooth textures glides right on with no transferring to be seen. If you’re in the market for a tight-liner then this may be worth a look-in. The Tom Ford on the other hand as lovely as it is, coming in at a whopping £42 is not something I would propose to be high priority of your wishlist. Lets wait for the dupes to come in…
